Decisions, decisions...

I'd like to know why it is so @#$%&* hard to pick a paint colour for myself.  This is so totally frustrating!

In a previous post I told you about my dresser find on kijiji that I absolutely adore.  I love the lines and the workmanship!

What I didn't love were the many scratches, missing veneer on the feet and the mahogany colour of the piece.  So it became a project - one that has taken me F.O.R.E.V.E.R. to accomplish!

Of course, as with every project, there are like a gazillion steps before you can get to the fun stuff - and I'm NOT exaggerating!  I got through most of those steps, sanding, patching, asking Santa for and receiving a paint sprayer for Xmas, but this next one seems to be the absolute hardest.

What colour do I paint it???

The dresser will reside in our newly painted master complete with the new closet, closet doors and trim.  As I posted here the paint colour on the walls is Ostrich Feather from Pittsburgh Paints:

I love this colour.  I love how it is both gray and beige at the same time.  Throughout the day the room appears to change colours, not that I lounge in bed all day ;), but I do pop in now and again to admire the changes.

All of the trim and doors are done in BM's Snowfall White.  The colour combination makes the room feel very clean and airy and I love the results!

But now I have to decide the colour for my dresser.  Initially I thought of a nice creamy white like this.  It would contribute to the room's clean airy feel.

But I didn't want to wash out the beautiful lines and workmanship, so would it maybe look better in a darker colour, like a charcoal gray or a deep eggplant or even black.

But the grays aren't appealling to me for some reason - it's like they have no depth.  It's hard to explain.  So I took some time over the weekend to browse (and thin out to the delight of hubby) my massive collection of Shelter mags for inspiration.  I didn't find a whole lot, but came across a colour group that I thought I liked.  Something along these lines that would build on the brown in the wall colour.

And then I hit the local RONA and came home with a colour called Fortress which is more along the charcoal gray, with a bit of the brown mixed in.  Along these lines...

As you can clearly see I've made my decision - NOT!!!  I am all over the place with this - which is so disheartening, because I've been trained to help people select colour for their homes.  And I never go through this when I'm in a client's home - it's always clearly obvious to me what colours should be in their homes.  I think the problem is that I see and like so many inspiring rooms and colours that I can't choose one.

So, I need your help - tell me what you think!
  1. Mayonnaise
  2. Kendall Charcoal
  3. Gray
  4. Galaxy
  5. Gloss Black
  6. Livingston Gold
  7. Caramel Apple
  8. Taos Taupe
Or do you have a different suggestion? Although that would just be contributing to my indecision wouldn't it - LOL!

HELP!!!

  1. What about something completely different, like lavender or apple green or aqua blue??

I feel your pain.... the problem is we have too many fan decks and too many colour options!!

  3. Hmmm, it's tough especially with all those choices. I think you need to knock it down to at least three. What does the hubster say? : ) What I might try is the Mayonnaise with a glaze along the Livingston Gold color.

  4. If you want a soft light bedroom I'd paint it the mayonnaise colour and you could antique it as Kathy mentions above with a soft brown glaze. If you want drama - then go with the galaxy or gloss black - just remember that those dark colours show every piece of dust...

  5. I say gloss black just because I like a hit of drama and I think it is so chic. The piece is really stunning, so I can see why you are anxious to get the show on the road!! I know it's going to turn out lovely no matter what you choose!

  6. Firstly you need congrats on finding that piece. It's quite stunning!

Hmm ... looking over your colour choices and wishing I had my colour deck home. Since you are looking for opinions here is mine. The gloss black I would skip in favor of a semi-gloss finish. I think BM Willow would look awesome too.

    cheers

  7. You know Donna... as you were working through your options I kept thinking "the wall colour only darker". Love that Ostrich Feather... and taking that colour and making it way darker (in the range of your taos taupe) would be FAB! So that's my suggestion...
Looking forward to seeing what you do!

  8. The first thing that came to mind was a soft green, but it would depend on the bedding you were going to use. I could also see black but not glossy, just a semi-gloss.

  9. I would go for "Caramel Apple" just for the sound of it humm good :-) with a semi-gloss finish!
    Have fun!

  10. Ok soooo! Sometimes when we are going out to dinner and we get stuck in the "Where do you wanna go? I dunno... where do YOU wanna go?" game - the only thing we can do is start with where we don't want to go.

Following that theory... I would nix the Caramel Apple and Livingston Gold because they are too brown. Then I would nix the dark grays and black because they are too expected and maybe too restrictive.

Your piece is lovely - light or dark - it's lovely. I think the Kendall Charcoal and Taos Taupe are both soft and have the same "feel" as the wall color - that gray/brown thing.

In the end, I think I'd go with the Mayonnaise because it offers more opportunity to add some color - on the dresser - in the room. I might rough it up a little for that shabby-chic look.

But then... I'm on a color kick at my house, so I may be dragging my own issues into your house.

I think that with that beautiful piece and your lovely wall color... it's hard to go wrong. And besides... paint can always be redone.

I am WAY better at this in YOUR house than I am in MY house!

  11. Just had a thought looking at your dresser again -- I think you should fill the holes in the middle column of drawers and go with knobs instead of handles.

Have you made a decision on the colour yet??

BTW, deer fly season lasts right into the fall, so no break from them all summer :-(

  13. Love the dresser! Can't wait to see what you come up with. I was out using my paint sprayer on my dining room chairs yesterday, fun isn't it?
